Well I want to say I am surprised a web site as large as Tech Crunch was hacked, but I really am not. I believe TC uses one of the largest open source blogging platforms on the web today. WordPress has thousands, if not millions of users world wide blogging at all hours of the day. Open source software are easy targets, especially when the software is as popular as WordPress. With the increased popularity comes increased attention from hackers. Once a script is released to gain access to a WordPress install, it spreads quickly and those who don’t update their software fall victim to these script kiddies.
Although, I bet even if they weren’t using WordPress, they still would of been hacked – eventually.
